The introduction of the Action Button on the iPhone was not the only physical change that Apple wanted to bring to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, as the company was also testing solid-state buttons for these two flagships. Unfortunately, a myriad number of technical difficulties meant that the feature would not arrive on time, with the same problem persisting during the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max launch. While we will not hold it against Apple to drop this idea, a tipster states that the technology giant wants to bring solid-state buttons to the iPhone, but it is making sure to get past the reliability hurdles first.
The solid-state buttons on an iPhone not only need to feel like actual buttons but need to be reliable too; Apple is reportedly failing to address these issues
While bringing solid-state buttons to an iPhone might seem like a Nothing-burger, it appears that there is more science involved in making sure that these additions function like regular buttons. Since there are more complications involved than previously anticipated, it is likely that these solid-state buttons will not make their way to the iPhone 17 series. Theoretically, such buttons should be more reliable than their physical counterparts, but on Weibo, Setsuna Digital mentions that Apple is still overcoming this challenge.
In his post, the tipster writes that the California-based giant is adjusting the design of the solid-state buttons to function reliably after long-term use. He also mentions the problem of false touches and that the responsiveness of these buttons is not guaranteed. Even if Apple has not been successful in bringing this change to its iPhones, it has met in the middle by introducing Camera Control on the iPhone 16. If Apple has been able to successfully implement the Action Button on its devices, it is only a matter of time before solid-state buttons make the cut too.
Then again, Apple has a habit of taking its sweet time when porting features to its devices and other products, but that is only because it wants these changes to function as perfectly as possible.
