When the War on Poverty was declared in 1964 by President Johnson there was optimistic talk about ending poverty in ten years.

The War on Poverty did alleviate poverty. It did not do so in ways that were politically sustainable, but it did alleviate poverty. It turned millions of the working poor into unemployable welfare dependents, but those welfare dependents thought they were better off. When added up their benefits were better than their wages had been, and they had leisure as well. Many of these devoted their leisure to illustrating the folk saying, "The devil finds work for idle hands."

My initial point was that reducing poverty did not reduce the crime rate - it doubled - but increasing the prison population did reduce the crime rate, even while poverty became more severe.

The Tuskagee Airmen were given the mission of protecting allied bombers from enemy air attack. Their mission was not to shoot down enemy aircraft. One tactic used by all air forces when attacking bombers protected by fighters is to draw off the fighters. It takes tremendous discipline to stay with the formation, rather than chase after an enemy fighter. Other fighter groups tasked with protecting bombers had aces in their units. They lost more bombers to enemy air attack.

The Tuskagee Airmen had the most enviable record of any air force, allied or axis, when it came to completing their mission. At most, 4 bombers protected by the Tuskagee Airmen were lost to enemy air attack. And that record gets even more impressive when you understand that our own bomber crews would fire on the Tuskagee Airmen because, you know, they were "niggers".

The Tuskagee Airmen were the best air group in WWII, allied or axis.
