Jenna Bush Hager knows first hand that some romantic setups can last a lifetime. Her own parents, Laura and George W. Bush, met on a blind date nearly 40 years ago and were married just three months later.
The former first daughter tells PEOPLE she had this in mind when she tried to set her twin sister, Barbara Bush, up with Prince Harry on national television – a move that Jenna later said totally “humiliated” her sister.
“You know, my parents were set up on a blind date so if I could set my sister up And Prince Harry’s a great guy,” Jenna said. “I mean, the work that he does with the Invictus Games is so important.”
Jenna admits this isn’t the first time she’s tried to play matchmaker for her single sister – but it is her first attempt at landing Barbara a royal.
“Never with a prince,” Jenna said.
The Today show correspondent asked Prince Harry about his love life during an interview on Monday, saying, “Does it make you laugh that people are already asking you about children? I mean, it’s sort of jumping ahead a couple steps.”
“Everybody’s always asking me. I have no idea. I haven’t even got a girlfriend at the moment,” Harry replied with a laugh.
That’s when Cupid – a.k.a. Jenna – drew back her bow: “I have a single sister and she feels the same way. Listen, she’s available. She’s going to kill me.”
“We can talk maybe off air,” Harry replied.
“Okay, I’ll give you her number,” Jenna said.

“The joke was that everybody’s jumping ahead,” Jenna told PEOPLE of the media asking Prince Harry about when he plans to have children. “Don’t you remember graduating from college and everybody’s, ‘So now what are you going to do for your life? When are you getting married? When are you having children?’ Everybody loves to jump ahead 20 steps. And so I thought it was so funny that everyone said, ‘Ask him when he’s having children.’ And I’m like, ‘Isn’t he single?’ So it was more of a joke about that.”
“And then I couldn’t help, when he said he was single, to throw my sister under the bus – just like sisters do,” Jenna added. “Frankly, I think that I was doing her a favor She was humiliated. But I think she also got a kick out of it.”
“It was funny,” her mom, Laura, chimed in.
“It was a joke because I don’t think it’s really going to become this match made in heaven,” Jenna said. “But if it does –”
“– you’ll be happy,” the former first lady offered.
“I will be happy,” Jenna replied.
